Benefits

ShieldMe features an easy, modern and rich user interface along with other indirect benefits, described below.

If you are trying to stream media content to devices which don’t have native VPN capabilities, you are in luck, because ShieldMe will take care of this issue for you.

Many smart TVs don’t feature operating systems which allow a VPN client to be installed, even when the VPN provider offers said feature.

Game console systems like PlayStation or Xbox also suffer from this issue. Although they allow for media content to be streamed, they don’t support VPN connections natively.

Most of the VPN providers out there limit the number of simultaneous connections to their service, so if you have lots of devices or clients, this unfortunately means you normally need multiple subscriptions to support this scenario.

Not anymore, because with ShieldMe you can use just one connection for your router to cover ALL devices in your home with no device connection limit.

Your IP address reveals your geo-location and, for this reason, you cannot watch live sporting events or other geo-filtered content when you are abroad.

Worse yet, advertisers and cyber-criminals can use your IP address against you. In addition to other means they may employ, your IP address helps them track your online behavior, record your browsing history, and gather a significant amount of personal information.

Simply put, using ShieldMe on top of the router & VPN subscription, will make your online activity and IP address hidden by default. This is done by encrypting your traffic, routing it through a secure remote server, and assigning you the server’s IP address. In practice, this means three things:

  1. Your ISP can’t see what’s in your data, where it is ultimately going and where it’s coming back from
  2. Even if someone intercepts your data, it will look like meaningless gibberish to them, thanks to encryption
  3. The site you are visiting does not know your actual location and allows you to securely access local content

When it comes to accessing content online, the faster the Internet, the more enjoyable it will be to download and watch. But what if you don’t get the speed you’re paying for? You are probably the victim of bandwidth limitation. Relentless blackouts and sudden drops in speed are the main characteristics of the bandwidth throttling that ISPs (Internet Service Providers) use to slow down the internet connection of their users in some cases (e.g. online service offered by competitor). Bandwidth limitation can occur at any time or any point between your device (smartphone, tablet or personal computer) and the specific services or sites you are using.

ShieldMe mitigates these unorthodox practices by extending the traffic protection and anonymity provided by the VPN service to your entire network.

While having a VPN is a great benefit, sometimes customization is needed. As an example, if you are working from home, you must connect to the workplace network and, while using a VPN provider, the connection is hindered or even blocked outright by your company network policies.

On the other hand, you might still want to access specific sites that are not connected to your work. In these cases, ShieldMe allows you to setup custom rules for VPN behavior on specific sites, IP addresses or online resources.

DD-WRT and OpenWrt are powerful, extensible and secure open source alternatives to the stock firmware of your personal router.

Both DD-WRT and OpenWrt are designed by network professionals and other contributors who care about the performance of their network. They incorporate many algorithms from recent research that perform far better than vendor-supplied firmware.

As a result, these firmware can reduce the number of interruption in connectivity, glitches or other router issues. This will give you an improved quality of service (general Wi-Fi performance, lag, bandwidth etc.), which is important when you stream media, are video conferencing, or when playing video games.

Vendor firmware ships with a fixed set of capabilities and features. Both DD-WRT and OpenWrt are powerful alternatives that come with support for additional software packages to be installed on your router.

This approach lets users choose which additional functionality they want to install and makes the base size of the firmware much smaller which in turn means many more devices are supported.
Because DD-WRT and OpenWrt are both Linux-based systems, users have complete control over all the functionality and behavior of their device.

Both feature web-based interfaces that allow users to quickly and easily make changes to their router operation.

For more advanced users, using SSH or Telnet for direct command line interaction is not possible with stock firmware, resulting in less control and customization possibilities, in contrast to these alternatives that allow this kind of flexibility.
More often than not, router manufacturers lag behind when it comes to patching wireless routers with serious security holes, especially if the device is a few years old.

Embracing open source instead of depending on a router manufacturer has the benefit of  having many developers from all over the world constantly and regularly reviewing and improving the firmware before it is released.

In addition, this approach makes development transparent and fixes are released faster. Having the community working on these issues means there are many more pairs of eyes watching, hence less chances for things to slip through the cracks.
These open source firmware are well known for their advanced features that come by default with installation.

Features like Bandwidth Monitor, VLAN Support, QoS and Advanced Wireless Setups  are just a few examples and may not be present on the manufacturer’s firmware.
Another important feature is granular control over DNS with DNSmasq, essential if you want to implement ad-blocking for the entire network at a central level.

These features enable you to achieve much more with your router than you normally can with stock firmware.
